Stephen Curry
2009-Present
Stephen Curry has been one of the most recent players to have a tremendous impact on how the game of basketball is played today. He started the three point trend. Teams now take an average of 30 threes per game. Curry shoots threes from the parking lot and still makes them and because of this teams realized that threes are more valuable than twos. Statistics show that threes shot at a lower percentage allow for more points than twos shot at a better percentage. “3-pointers are now incredibly important as Curry makes them look easy. Fans eagerly try to get a glimpse of Curry’s warm-up routines to figure out how to practice their own skills” (Alexander). This type of marksmanship had never been seen in the NBA, off the dribble, catch and shoot, and step back threes. Curry put great importance to three point shooting, that even NBA big men have to be able to shoot threes or they will not be playing. “No matter how tightly he was guarded, his supreme ball handling, quick-trigger release and laser accuracy meant he still found a way for them to fall” (Davis).
“Curry's defining legacy could be his impact on how the game is played. In part due to his success, the NBA has moved away from physical play around the basket and towards the concepts of 'pace and space' and three-point shooting” (Davis). Curry has also showed the world that NBA players don’t have to be seven feet tall or freakishly athletic, to have a successful NBA career. Kids nowadays look up to Stephen Curry and want to do everything he does, fans come to his games two hours early just to see him warm-up.
